Summer arrival Calvin Bassey has turned out to be a “brilliant signing” for Rangers, according to Alan Hutton.
The former Gers and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits he has been dazzled by the way the 20-year-old has filled the boots of Borna Barisic at left-back this season.
As revealed by Football Insider earlier this week, Rangers took advantage of the cross-border rules to sign Bassey for just £300,000 compensation after his contract at Leicester City expired.
It is understood the Foxes had offered the defender a new deal to stay at the King Power Stadium, while West Ham had seen a transfer bid rejected earlier in the year.
Hutton admits he has been seriously impressed by what he has seen from the young defender so far and insists he is genuine competition for Barisic.
Hutton told Football Insider: “He’s been fantastic and, from everything that I read and hear and people talking about him, he’s young, he’s hungry, he’s desperate to learn, he wants to improve as a player, he really enjoys training.
“He ticks all the boxes and it’s really good to hear that, it must be a manager’s dream. He understands Barisic is in front of him at the moment but he’s pushing him, he’s willing to fight for that place and he’s going to have to because Barisic is one of the standout players for Rangers.
“He’s got a big task on his hands but for him to come in and not play week in, week out and to show the quality that he has, I think he’s been excellent.
“Yes, he’s still a bit rough round the edges but he’s so young and has got so much to learn. I think that’s what he’ll do under Steven Gerrard and he looks like a real find, a real quality, brilliant signing.”
Bassey has started two games and featured as a substitute a further five times since his move to Glasgow.
