'He's excited' - Former teammate gives verdict on McAllister at Rangers
Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister is “excited” to be taking up his post at Ibrox alongside Steven Gerrard, according to one of his former team-mates.
According to Ally Mauchlen, who played with McAllister at Motherwell, Leicester City and Leeds United, the former Scotland captain is excited to take charge after speaking with him a few times over the summer – although Mauchlen admits the Gers are “miles away” from bitter rivals Celtic.
Mauchlen revealed that he thinks McAllister will be targeting improving the Gers home record after dropping a record 23 points at Ibrox last term in the league.
“All I’m praying is that he and Steven Gerrard can go up there and close the gap. I still live down south and work at Leicester City so I don’t follow Scottish football that closely,” Mauchlen said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“But I do know that Celtic are a bit away from Rangers at the moment. If I wasn’t a Rangers fan I’d say they were miles away from them!
“I’ve spoken to Gary a couple of times over the summer and I can tell from his voice that he’s excited about the job.

“Looking at it from the outside, you can imagine what they’ll target. Rangers dropped 23 points at home last season and finished 12 points behind Celtic.”
Football Insider verdict:
Of course he’s excited to be taking up his post at Ibrox – he’s joining one of the biggest clubs on the planet with a passionate fanbase, world-class stadium and training ground and worldwide attention. It probably also helps that he’s a Rangers fan. Gary Mac will be acutely aware of what is expected this season from the Light Blues after the disappointments of last term and will be desperate to put it right. If the Light Blues can overhaul bitter rivals Celtic and lift the Scottish Premiership title this season, McAllister and Gerrard will have written their names into the club’s folklore after a long wait for a major trophy. Making strides in Europe this season will also be a big aim for the Gers management team after the shambolic exit at the hands of Luxembourgish minnows Progres Niederkorn last year. With time quickly ticking down until the competitive games gets underway, the Gers will be champing at the bit to get started.
