‘He’s just signed a new contract’ – Newcastle United fans can’t believe Dan Ashworth could be about to join Man United
Fans have been left baffled by Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth’s links to a move to Man United.
The 52-year-old is reportedly closing in on a potential move to Old Trafford with incoming investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe eager to appoint him to replace of current chief John Murtough. Football Insider understands third-party talks have indeed taken place behind the scenes.
Ashworth moved to the riches of St James’ Park in February last year after his successful three-year spell at Brighton where he grew his reputation as a shrewd talent spotter.
Man United have had significant recruitment issues, including spending big fees on underperforming talents like Antony and Jadon Sancho, but Ratcliffe is keen to right these wrongs after his £1.25billion investment is completed.
Fans are amazed that such a highly regarded director like Ashworth would consider moving to United amid their struggles on and off the pitch.
They have taken to social media in response, and many feel he would be a “fool” to switch Tyneside for Manchester.
One supporter questioned why he would downgrade from Newcastle to a “smaller club”.
This fan questioned Ashworth’s intelligence if he accepted the move.
Some fans just couldn’t see Ashworth making the move to join the “circus” in Manchester.
This supporter was adamant that Ashworth would be better of at Newcastle.
This fan slammed United as a “tin pot” club.
This fan suggested that even if Ashworth wanted to leave the Magpies, they simply would not let him “in a million years”.
