Danny Mills has tipped Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino to snub Jan Vertonghen for a starting role against Newcastle United on Sunday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds and England international says that the performance of Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld against Manchester City could keep the big name Spurs star out of the line-up for another week.
Sanchez and Alderweireld have started both Premier League games, winning against Aston Villa 3-1 before managing to secure a 2-2 draw with the reigning champions.
Mills says that the performance and result against Pep Guardiola’s men, when the defence was peppered with shots, means that Vertonghen cannot expect to be reinstated to the starting XI this weekend.
He told Football Insider: “They’ll probably go: ‘We did okay, we did pretty well against Manchester City, we rode our luck at times.’
“They did what they were supposed to do, so it would be highly unlikely he would change it for this weekend.”
Vertonghen was completely left out of the matchday squad against Aston Villa on the opening day of the season before returning to the substitutes’ bench against City.
He played a total of 34 times last season but saw his campaign extended until the start of June thanks to international duty with Belgium.
