Leeds have been linked with a host of names this month as Garry Monk looks to reinforce his squad for their promotion bid.
Several former Leeds stars have been rumoured to be in contention to return to Elland Road, including Man City’s Fabian Delph.
Delph has established himself as a Premier League player since departing Leeds back in 2009, but would be a fantastic addition to Monk’s squad for the second-half of the season.
The 27-year-old has fallen out of favour at Manchester City, and has made just four appearances in all competitions this season.
He has not appeared in the Premier League since August, and was named in the matchday squad for only the seventh time this season for Saturday’s meeting with Everton. He was an unused substitute as City lost the game 4-0.
The England international midfielder has struggled to stay fit for long periods, and Guardiola could allow Delph to join another club on loan to regain his fitness.
Given their relationship with Delph over the years, Leeds should look to take advantage of his lack of regular first-team football at the Etihad, and try to push through a six-month loan deal.
Delph began his senior career at Leeds just over a decade ago, making 54 appearances for the club before joining Aston Villa in 2009. He later returned to Elland Road on loan for a month in 2012, where he made a further five appearances.
A third stint at the Championship club may seem unlikely, but it could make the difference in Leeds’ attempts to win promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since the 2003-04 season.
He would add more steel to the Leeds midfield, and his ability to win the ball back in the middle of the park can help Leeds exert their dominance on the promotion stage.
The energy that Delph could inject into Leeds’ side could also prove invaluable, as well as his power and will-to-win.
Monk does already have a decent array of midfield talent at his disposal, and fans have had a decent glimpse of a potential future star in youngster Ronaldo Vieira so far this season.
Eunan O’Kane and Liam Bridcutt have also been instrumental to Leeds’ recent form, but Delph would be the icing on the cake. A true player of quality to put the finishing touches to a fantastic Leeds team.
Interest in Delph would likely divide supporters at Elland Road, with some set to welcome the return of a player that could offer a great deal to their side; while others would prefer Monk to forget the past and focus on making the most of his current midfield unit.
Regardless of what the fans may think, or how realistic a deal might be to pursue, there is no denying that Leeds would benefit from having Delph back – albeit temporarily.
In other Leeds transfer news, fans have called on Twitter for the club to sign Leonardo Ulloa.
