Howe told to be braced for 'big egos' at Newcastle as five new deals all but done - pundit

Eddie Howe is facing a “big challenge” at Newcastle despite a “great track record” of developing talent, according to Kevin Phillips.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the former Bournemouth boss could struggle to manage the “big egos” on Tyneside.

This site revealed yesterday (November 5th) that Howe is set to be announced as the new Newcastle manager after reaching a full agreement.

The Englishman has also selected his coaching staff, with Jason Tindall (assistant manager), Stephen Purches (coach) and Dan Hodges (fitness) all set to arrive at St James’ Park.

Current caretaker Graeme Jones will stay on in the role of first-team coach.

Phillips insisted Howe could find it “a bit difficult” to manage the “big characters” at the Tyneside club.

“He developed players who stayed with him through the leagues, but in the Premier League it can be hard,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“When big players come through the door with big characters, some managers can find it a bit difficult.

“That will be a big challenge at Newcastle. I’m not saying he can’t do it, because I’m sure Eddie would love the job.

“But Newcastle is a different category of club to Bournemouth, and he’ll be managing players who have got those big egos. Only time will tell whether he can deal with that.

“He’s got a great track record of developing talent – but would he get the time to do that at Newcastle?

“From now to the end of the season, he doesn’t have the time. He needs to go in and identify the problem areas and bring in some fresh blood in January to keep them in that league long-term.”
