Kevin Phillips claimed Leeds United have suffered a “huge blow” after Liam Cooper was effectively ruled out of Sunday’s game against Burnley.

The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said that the 29-year-old will be a “big loss” for a Marcelo Bielsa side looking to bounce back from a 6-2 loss at Manchester United.

Speaking at his press conference today, Bielsa revealed that the Scotland international strained his abdominals last weekend and was unsure on when he would return.

 

Cooper joins long-term injury absentees Robin Koch and Gaetano Berardi in the medical room at Thorp Arch as the Whites defensive issues worsen.

However, the Yorkshire club have been boosted by the imminent return of Diego Llorente this week.

When asked by Football Insider for his reaction to the latest injury news to come out of Elland Road, Phillips said: “They have suffered a lot of blows this season.

“It is a huge blow to lose Cooper this weekend because defensively they were all over the place against Manchester United.

“It is a big loss for Leeds and they have a real test coming up in their next game. They need their best defenders out there right now.

“They need to respond from a mauling against Manchester United. They will always create opportunities, they just need to sure it up at the back.”
