Huge boost for Celtic as fan favourite set for early return v Zenit
Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong is set to make his comeback against Zenit St Petersburg a week on Thursday, according to a report.
The Daily Record understands that the 25-year-old has recovered from a hernia operation that he underwent in the middle of January.
News of Armstrong’s return to the fold will be a much-needed boost for Brendan Rodgers’ injury-ridden side, who have been struggling to deal with losing a number of their first team stars.
And as if to make matters worse, only on Saturday, they lost Kristoffer Ajer and Dedryck Boyata during the 1-0 defeat against Kilmarnock.
Leigh Griffiths is also an absentee which means that Armstrong’s comeback could not have emerged at a better time.
His return will surprise many due to the fact that it has only been three weeks since he underwent a procedure to solve a long-running injury and the midfielder was expected to need more time to recover.
In fact, Celtic’s mounting injury list is so bad that January signing that 22-year-old Jack Hendry is set for his European debut due to Marvin Compper being cup-tied and crocked duo Ajer and Boyata both thought to be out.
The Hoops have a Scottish Cup tie against Partick Thistle on Saturday and Rodgers will be keen to ensure his side is wrapped in cotton-wool to prevent any further problems.
