Noel Whelan is over the moon Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips is set to return to light training ahead of the weekend clash against Crystal Palace.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Whites and Aberdeen striker insisted the news was a “huge boost” after the 24-year-old was sorely missed in the 4-1 loss to Leicester City on Monday night.

Phillips suffered a shoulder injury last month and it was initially announced by Leeds that the England international could be out for up to six weeks.

However, it was revealed by Football Insider yesterday that the holding midfielder hopes to be out running at Thorp Arch later this week as he steps up his recovery.

Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace will come too early for Phillips but he hopes to be in contention for games against Arsenal and Everton after the mid-November international break.

However, Whelan was hopeful Raphinha, who missed Monday’s defeat against the Foxes, would return for the game against Palace.

“It is a huge boost to hear that about Kalvin,” he told Football Insider. “We need to try and get these players back as soon as possible.

“It was noticeable against Leicester that he was not there and of course you miss big players like that.

“We could have done with Raphinha as well. He might be in contention for Saturday and that would be great. He has such ability so hopefully he will be on the bench.

“We need to try and keep our core group of players fit if we are going to have half a chance this season.”
