Kevin Phillips heaps praise on Jacob Murphy after the Rangers target made his first Premier League start of the 2020/21 campaign for Newcastle.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner was elated that the 25-year-old had “bounced back” after a summer of great uncertainty.
Murphy scored an 89th equaliser against Wolves on Sunday in what was his first Premier League start since December 2018.
Football Insider revealed last month that Steven Gerrard was interested in bringing the attacker to Ibrox but an approach was ultimately unsuccessful.
Steve Bruce has found a place for Murphy in his side despite the £10m signing from Norwich City in 2017 having entered the final eight months of his contract at St. James’ Park.
When asked by Football Insider if he is surprised Murphy has been given a second chance on Tyneside, Phillips said: “I always believe players deserve a second chance.
“It is them all about whether you can take it and the lad certainly did. He scored a fantastic free kick the other night, it was not a worldie though because the wall was terrible.
“It does not matter though, he took the opportunity and it is great to see the lad bounce back from a knock back. He has found the form that got him to Newcastle in the first place.
“Newcastle is a huge, huge club so it is great to see. Hopefully it continues and he gets a real good run in the side now and continues to play well.”
