Rangers within hours of major announcement after wrapping up talks this morning - report
Rangers will confirm Steven Gerrard as their new manager “within hours” after a deal was done on Friday morning for the 37-year-old to replace Graeme Murty in the Ibrox dugout, according to a report.
The Scottish Sun claims an announcement is expected early on Friday afternoon after the Gers struck a three-year deal to bring the 114-times capped former England midfielder to take the reins at Ibrox.
The Sun also claim that police are expected crowds to “flock” to Ibrox for the unveiling of the ex-Liverpool and LA Galaxy star.
Gerrard will now go head-to-head with his former manager at Anfield, Brendan Rodgers, as he looks to stop Rodgers’ Celtic side winning a eighth consecutive Scottish title.
Football Insider verdict:
What a whirlwind few days it has been for Rangers fans. First the news broke the board were in talks with Gerrard, then they had to suffer the embarrassment of losing 5-0 to bitter rivals Celtic as they wrapped up a seventh successive title and now it looks as though we are into the final few minutes before Gerrrard is confirmed as the Gers new manager. The 37-year-old’s arrival could spark scenes similar to that of another famous English midfielder – Paul Gascoigne – arrival at Ibrox if thousands of fans do flock to Edmiston Drive to welcome their new manager. If Gerrard can have half of the impact at Ibrox that Gascoigne did then he’s in for quite the ride. While it is far too early to say if Gerrard will be a success, it is fair to say the appointment has caught the imagination of supporters.
