Graeme Murty has delivered a huge boost to Rangers ahead of the Old Firm clash with Celtic, with the news that Lee Wallace will play in the friendly against St Mirren this week.
Wallace is targeting a return to the first team ahead of the Old Firm clash at Ibrox and Murty has confirmed that he will play this week before assessing him for the huge match on Sunday.
Talking to the official Rangers website, Murty said: “I have a game arranged at the training ground for those guys who haven’t had many match minutes recently, which is good for us. We will get a game in there and make sure they get through that okay.
“Yes Lee Wallace will feature in the game this week and we will see about the weekend, we will see how he gets through it.
“I know what it is like to be out long term, you come back in and you are training really well but it is completely different in a match.
“Sometimes you run around and you feel as though you have lungs that are a quarter of the size that they used to be just because you are not used to the stimulus of a match day.”
Murty also confirmed that Declan John could be fit for the Old Firm game too, saying he was “hopeful” of having a fit left-back for the Celtic game.
Football Insider verdict:
This is great news for Celtic. However, Wallace has been out with his groin problem since September and he could be a way off match fitness – especially a match as big as the Old Firm clash with Celtic. Murty will assess him in the game against St Mirren before deciding whether he can play a part on Sunday. However, with John also targeting a return Murty has said he’s confident he’ll have one or the other for the Old Firm clash. That’s a big boost for the team.
