Mignolet delivers verdict on Liverpool top-four hopes after victory v Watford

By Will Butcher

Simon Mignolet believes Liverpool are in control of their fate as they look to finish in the Premier League’s top four places and qualify for the Champions League.

Liverpool edged closer to a place in Europe’s elite competition on Monday night with a 1-0 win over Watford at Vicarage Road, after Man United, Man City and Arsenal dropped points.

Speaking to talkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams, the Belgium international claimed, “It is in our hands.

“We had to do our job today. Other results went our way over the weekend; there are three games to go and we need to keep doing the same things. It is in our hands,” Mignolet said.

“We don’t see the next three games as easy. Southampton will be a tough game and we have struggled against them in the cup. We know what they’re about, but it’ll be a struggle.

“We want to qualify for the Champions League, it’s what Liverpool are about throughout their history. The Champions League is the best platform to show we are hungry.”

Liverpool secured a 1-0 win against the Hornets with a goal-of-the-season contender from German midfielder Emre Can, who acrobatically converted Lucas’ chip in first-half injury time.

It saw the Reds go three points clear of Man City in third place, as they return to Anfield on Sunday to entertain Claude Puel’s Southampton.

Manager Jurgen Klopp will be hoping his side can forget about their dismal form against the Saints in the EFL Cup semi-final, which saw them lose 1-0 in both legs.

Three points would push Liverpool within a whisker of qualifying for the Champions League next season, before they travel to West Ham and face Middlesbrough at Anfield.
