Hutton ‘gutted’ for Rangers starlet Patterson amid manager update

Alan Hutton has admitted he was “gutted” to see Rangers starlet Nathan Patterson miss Scotland’s 2-2 draw against the Netherlands.

The former Gers star, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 19-year-old could have staked a claim for a starting role had he not been ruled out.

Patterson was one of six players who did not travel to Portugal to face the Netherlands as a precaution after John Fleck tested positive for Coronavirus.

However, speaking to Sky Sports, Steve Clarke confirmed the six would take part in training ahead of Sunday’s game against Luxembourg.

Hutton admitted his heart bled for the young Rangers star after the news he would miss Wednesday’s friendly.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I’m gutted for him. I mean, how’s your luck?

“To go away and get picked is probably one of the best moments of his young career so far. Then this happens because you’ve been in close contact with somebody. It’s the world we live in at this moment in time.

“I really believe that these were a couple of games where if he played, showed how good he is and he can handle international football, I think he would have started. I think there’s an opportunity for him to go and play there for 10 years.

“If he keeps improving the way has done so far, I think there’s a massive opportunity and an opening in that Scotland squad. Especially for a player that has his attributes.

“I was gutted for him that he couldn’t play because of this reason. Hopefully, after a few days it will be okay and we might see him in this Luxembourg game.

Patterson was called up to Clarke’s squad after just 16 senior appearances at Rangers.

He played three times for Scotland’s under-21s before his senior call-up.
