Hutton: Smith Rowe 'excites me' and I hope Aston Villa 'get it done' after bid update

Dwight McNeil is a “fantastic player” but Alan Hutton would rather see Aston Villa sign Emile Smith Rowe.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Villa and Scotland full-back suggested McNeil may find it difficult to break into Dean Smith’s starting XI.

Football Insider learned on 6 July that Aston Villa will turn their attention to McNeil if they fail to land Smith Rowe from Arsenal.

A Villa source has told Football Insider that the Midlands giants are submitting a third bid worth over £32million for Smith Rowe.

The Gunner have rejected two bids of £25million and £30million rejected but have not given Villa a definitive ‘no’.

“It’s a difficult one,” Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“I see them as different players. Dwight McNeil’s a winger, an Anwar El Ghazi-type who can take players on and get the ball in the box.

“I think he’s a fantastic player but you just wonder if the likes of Jack Grealish are still around, is he going to play that much? It will be difficult for him to break in.

“Emile Smith Rowe is a player who can play in several positions and that obviously helps you. So if Jack stays there’s room to manoeuvre him around the pitch.

“For me, Smith Rowe excites me more. It’s nothing to do with him being at Arsenal and McNeil being at Burnley. I think they’re both talented boys I just think he’s got that magic in him.

“He can play that number 10 role, see a pass. He’s obviously very young and that excites me. I hope they can get that one done.”
