Hutton suggests Rangers clearing first-team pathway to keep King after source's update today
Alan Hutton has suggested Rangers will need to promise first-team football to get Leon King to sign a new contract at Ibrox.
The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 17-year-old may be willing to stay if there is a clear pathway to the senior side.
As revealed by Football Insider on Tuesday (30 November), Rangers are opening talks with King over a new contract to avoid losing him in the new year.
An Ibrox source told this site today the club are hopeful of agreeing terms over the coming months.
The Gers’ talks come after this site revealed (26 November) Manchester United and Newcastle United are among the starlet’s suitors in England.
Hutton suggested the Light Blues would have to assure King of future playing time to get him to commit.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “This is a young prospect that they’ll want to keep a hold of, there’s no doubt in my mind about that.
“Van Bronckhorst’s obviously focusing on the first team but he needs to try and integrate these kind of prospects for the future into the squad now.
“Try show them the pathway, that it is there for them if they work hard. They will obviously want to tie him down as soon as possible.
“I think as a youngster, obviously he’d love to play in the first team. I think if you show them there’s a way into the first team, there’s a path and opportunities are going to arise, you’re willing to stay.
“He’s still a young boy, still a lot to learn and they want to play in the first team. So as long as they give them those kinds of assurances, I know you can’t tell somebody you’re definitely going to play.
“But as long as they’re aware there’s a possibility if they do well they can breakthrough then you’re willing to hang around.”
King played twice for Rangers’ senior side last season.
He was on the bench for the 2-0 win over Sparta Prague last week.
