Hutton: This is when Allan McGregor will make Rangers contract decision after source reveal

Allan McGregor will wait until after taking a holiday to decide whether to sign a new contract at Rangers, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Gers defender and close friend of the Ibrox shot-stopper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 40-year-old needs time to see how his body feels after another gruelling campaign at Ibrox.

An Ibrox source told Football Insider this month (9 May) that Rangers have been in advanced talks with McGregor over a new deal, with his current terms expiring this summer.

He came on as a last-minute substitute in Saturday’s Scottish Cup final win over Hearts in what may have been a farewell gesture.

Hutton heralded the decision but insisted the veteran goalkeeper’s time may not be up just yet.

“I thought it was pure class from Rangers,” Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“Whether it is or it isn’t (a farewell), obviously he’s keeping his cards close to his chest. He’s going to go away on holiday and think about what he wants to do.

“I think there’s an opportunity for him to sign again at Rangers but it’s just up to him and how his body’s feeling.

“Overall, it was pure class to bring him on, just in case.”

McGregor returned to Rangers on a free transfer back in 2018.

He has played a total of 445 times for the Glasgow giants during his two spells at Ibrox.

The shot-stopper made 48 appearances across all competitions during the 2021/22 campaign.
