Hutton: This may be real reason Gerrard is starting McLaughlin at Rangers
Alan Hutton has urged Steven Gerrard to axe Jon McLaughlin to bring Allan McGregor back into the Rangers starting XI on a regular basis.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender suggested the 39-year-old’s experience would help sort out the shaky defence at Ibrox.
McLaughlin went from zero to hero against Dundee after he saved a penalty he conceded on the way to a 1-0 win.
It was his fourth appearance in the Premiership this season.
Meanwhile, McGregor, who started the previous league game against Motherwell, has made just two top-flight outings this term.
The veteran did start the opening group stage game against Lyon in the Europa League.

However, the Rangers TV pundit has suggested McGregor should be brought back in as Gerrard’s first-choice in the league.
Hutton told Football Insider deputy editor Russell Edge: “In my eyes, Allan McGregor’s the number one. I think for a goalkeeper, it’s all about playing regularly, that’s how you get top form.
“We know Allan McGregor won’t be the future, as in the next two, three, four, five years, we know that. I still think he’s more than capable of playing 30-plus games in a season.
Let’s not kid ourselves, McLaughlin is a fine goalkeeper. Every time he’s come in, he’s done well, he’s got a good clean sheet record.
“You want that consistency within your back four and goalkeeper. I don’t think it helps when you tinker week to week.
“He knows better than I do. He knows the situation, what’s going on inside the camp. Maybe he’s protecting Allan McGregor.
“I would like to see Greigs (McGregor) between the sticks and get a run of games to help that defence.”
