'I am sure' - Exclusive: Phillips tips Leeds to hand contract to 'Super' player at end of season
Kevin Phillips tipped the “super” Gaetano Berardi to earn a new contract at Leeds United but not until the end of the season.
The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, insisted “deals will take care of themselves at the end of the season” with the sole focus promotion.
The 31-year-old is out of contract in June raising doubts over whether he will be at Elland Road next season.
Berardi played in United’s 1-0 win against Middlesborough in midweek. He earned plaudits for his performance at the heart of the defence as Ben White stepped into midfield for the injured Kalvin Phillips.
When asked whether the former Switzerland international would be in line for a new contract with the club, Phillips told Football Insider: “Berardi had a super game.
“When you get to this stage of the season most clubs will say, ‘Let’s get the season finished.’ But there might be some talks, I do not know.

“They will not sway from what they are trying to achieve and that is promotion. They will want everyone focused on that because the deals will take care of themselves at the end of the season and I am sure that will be the case.”
Berardi has scored twice in 149 appearances for the Whites since joining from Sampdoria in 2014.
The centre-back returned to the bench on Saturday as Marcelo Bielsa’s side thrashed Hull City 4-0 and moved to within a point of league leaders West Brom.
In other Leeds United news, Alan Hutton has told Football Insider Marcelo Bielsa has transformed the career of 28-year-old.
