Celtic defender Anthony Ralston has failed to live up to expectation and a new right back is an absolute must this summer, according to Jackie McNamara.
The former Bhoys star, speaking in an exclusive interview with Football Insider, says that the 20-year-old, who has 15 first team appearances under his belt at Parkhead, looked promising in the early stages of his fledgling career but has gone off the boil, leaving Neil Lennon to find a new recruit for the right hand side of the defence.
With Mikael Lustig out of contract in the summer, Football Insider revealing that Lennon wants to hand the veteran a new two year contract, and Jeremy Toljan returning to Borussia Dortmund on loan, the Hoops might find themselves without a recognised senior right back.
McNamara revealed he had high hopes for Ralston, the youngster impressing in his Champions League performances, but that he has not pushed on as expected and that recruitment is needed this summer.
“I think there has to be (a new right back signed),” McNamara exclusively told Football Insider.
“Ralston looked promising, I don’t know what happened to him? He had a loan at Dundee United and he hasn’t really kept on like I thought he would have so far.
“He’s still a young boy, there’s still a chance he can get that form back. He played the Champions League games and did well.”
Ralston played just five times in the first team during the 2018/19 season, a knee injury leaving him sidelined for much of the second half of the campaign.
In other Celtic news, it can be REVEALED that the Hoops have submitted a formal multi-million pound bid for a Premier League 26-year-old.
