‘I expect him to end up at Liverpool – Alexander Isak’s Newcastle teammate ‘in the frame’ for move

Liverpool could go after one of Alexander Isak’s teammates at Newcastle United this summer.

The Reds have already been closely linked with Isak for a number of months, as they look to lure him away from St James’ Park.

On Thursday, it was revealed that the Swedish international has told Newcastle that he wants to leave, after refusing to join the club on their pre-season trip.

The striker may not be the only Magpies player Liverpool are after either, as there are rumours that Anthony Gordon could make a move to Anfield.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Gordon could still end up on Merseyside this summer.

‘Newcastle will lose some big names’

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that he does expect Gordon to join Liverpool, despite the Premier League champions currently focusing on the Isak deal.

Arne Slot’s side have already been extremely busy in the transfer market this summer, signing the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez.

Wyness added that Eddie Howe may have to be very active in the rest of the window to replace all the departing players.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think that Eddie Howe wants that bit of stability and I think he needs to keep some players as well, if he’s going to lose some of the top ones.

“Another name that we’ve got to put in the frame that might be going is Anthony Gordon. I still expect him to end up at Liverpool, which would be another move down there to Anfield.

“I think Eddie Howe is going to be pretty active in the transfer window. It’s still amazing to me that there’s no sporting director in charge at this stage, but they’re carrying on with their business. They obviously know what they’re doing.

“Eddie’s taken a very hands-on approach, but there may well be some players to actually replace, and I do think they’re going to need to add at the back as well.

“They need as much stability now as possible after losing players like Callum Wilson. There may be some others that may be going, but Newcastle, I still feel very positive about the way they’re going to be developing the squad.”

Newcastle plot double move

Meanwhile, Newcastle are holding talks over deals for a new goalkeeper and a centre-forward, sources have told Football Insider.

The Magpies have struggled in the transfer market so far this summer, missing out on a number of targets.

Eddie Howe’s side looked all set to bring in James Trafford from Burnley before Manchester City hijacked the deal, which leaves the Tyneside club searching for another option between the sticks.

In terms of a striker, Newcastle were heavily linked with Ekitike from Frankfurt before Liverpool swooped in and agreed a deal.
