'I feel sorry for the fans' - Newcastle Exclusive: Darren Bent reacts amid major Sky update

Darren Bent insists that “everything is in place” for Newcastle United to become a Premier League powerhouse under new ownership but is “sorry for the fans” that the takeover is dragging on.

The former Tottenham and England hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says it would be “absolutely superb” to see another club challenge the top four.

As reported by Sky Sports, PCP Capital Partners are on the verge of buying the club from Mike Ashley with backing from both the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund and the Reuben Brothers.

As well as seeing their side relegated twice under Mike Ashley, the Toon Army have endured a host of controversy at St James’ Park.

However, Bent believes that the infrastructure in and around the city means the club can become a global power in football with the wealth of new investors.

Bent told Football Insider: “I feel sorry for the fans because this has been bubbling on for a while. They finally think they’ve got it over the line and it seems to be stalling at the wrong time.

“I think it would be absolutely superb for English football if we have another mega-money powerhouse coming to the league. At the moment you’ve got Chelsea, Manchester City, you’ve got Manchester United who can spend big, you’ve got Liverpool.

“When you’ve got a guy who’s got genuinely a lot of money, is willing to spend and go like Abramovic did, like the owners of Manchester City did, throw everything at it – they’ve got everything.

“They’ve already got the stadium, 52,000 going every week, they sell out the away ends so everything is in place. We’ve spoken about players like living in London, there’s an airport in Newcastle that flies to London in 40 minutes.

“They’ve got a great train service that takes three hours to get to London. I just think everything is set up for this to happen for Newcastle United and if it does, mate, it’s going to be so exciting.”

In other Newcastle United news, the Magpies have been touted to make a sensational signing for one of the most exciting names in football.
