Kevin Phillips has heaped unexpected praise on Sunderland defender Bailey Wright for his performance against Wimbledon but insisted he was disappointed by the result.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the Stadium of Light legend conceded that he got it “completely wrong” when he tipped Lee Johnson’s side to get beat at Lincoln City.
A resounding 4-0 win at Sincil Bank was followed by a 1-1 draw at home against Lincoln City, Bailey Wright scoring a second-half equaliser for the hosts.
The Black Cats have to wait until the 29th of December for their next match after the EFL postponed their next three fixtures after a Covid outbreak at the club – a matter which is being investigated by the league.
Phillips claimed Bailey Wright will play a pivotal role this season if his former club are to gain promotion.
“He’s a great player and it was fabulous finish for the goal against Wimbledon,” he told Football Insider.
“Bailey Wright will be an integral part of Sunderland’s push for promotion after Christmas so he needs to stay fit because it will be a testing time.”
“I hold my hands up, I got it completely wrong last week regarding the Lincoln game.
“That is what players need to do, prove people wrong and it was great to see that.
“But it was disappointing that such a positive result was followed up with a draw because you would have thought they would have be on a roll after that.”
