Noel Whelan cannot understand why “a lot of teams” are interested in signing Shane Duffy after another “poor” performance in a Celtic shirt.
The former Aberdeen and Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said he would not try and sign the 29-year-old as he has shown a lack of consistency.
Duffy started the 0-0 draw against Livingston while 13 of Celtic’s first team remained in isolation after Christopher Jullien tested positive for Covid-19.
The loan signing from Brighton has failed to settle in Glasgow and English Championship big hitters Nottingham Forest could offer him an exit route.
Whelan suggested it would be beneficial for the Hoops if the Republic of Ireland international left this month.
“He was poor again,” he told Football Insider.
“I do not know what will happen with him at the end of the season.
“I know a lot of teams want to sign him, Nottingham Forest for one, but I think he has shown a lot of inconsistency. I would not be trying to sign him, I really would not.
“He has struggled. It is a decision that Neil Lennon needs to make. Does he get him out there to another club if he can? That might help them to bring in somebody with a bit more quality.
“They need a few fresh faces in the side if they want to compete with Rangers anytime soon. Celtic’s team looks stale.
“Two points out of the last three games is simply not good enough for Celtic. The pressure is growing on Neil Lennon.”
