'I know the player...' - Exclusive: Pundit drops big Leeds-Wilshere transfer view
Noel Whelan claims Leeds United would not be willing to take a risk on former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere even though he is available on a free.
The ex-Elland Road striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, is adamant that Marcelo Bielsa would not want to sign the 28-year-old because of his torrid injury record.
Wilshere mutually agreed to terminate his contract at West Ham in October after a two-year spell at the London Stadium which resulted in just 19 appearances.
A shoulder injury to Kalvin Phillips left Marcelo Bielsa’s squad stretched earlier this month with centre-back Pascal Struijk asked to step into midfield.
However, despite Whelan stressing the importance of Leeds signing a midfielder in January he does not believe Wilshere is the answer.
“I am in two minds,” he told Football Insider. “I know the player Jack Wilshere can be but I also know that he is injury-prone.

“If it was a pay-as-you-play scenario then that is acceptable but if it is a long-term contract then no.
“I do believe that we have got young players in that team, looking at the likes of Shackleton, that could get to where Wilshere once was, not now, once was.
“Wilshere is now looked upon as ‘that player’ because he has been missing for two seasons now.
“I know that Marcelo Bielsa does not really go for players of that age and he is very sensible about players that have had injuries.
“We saw the situation with Cuisance. I do not think the club would be willing to take that risk.”
