Rangers defender Connor Goldson has admitted he “wasn’t sure” about moving to Rangers when he first head about their interest – revealing he had “never thought about” a move to Scotland.
The former Brighton ace completed his move north last week and joined his new colleagues in Spain as they go through their paces at the Gers’ training camp.
The 25-year-old also revealed that he didn’t want to go somewhere that the team “wasn’t winning” and admits Gerrard’s plans were a “big pull” in his decision.
“I wasn’t sure about going to Scotland at first. I’d always thought about going into the Championship, I’d never thought about Scotland,” Goldson said, as quoted by The Argus.
“When they came in I had to think about it, because they are such a big cub.
“Obviously, the new manager was a big pull, his plans for the team and what he wanted to do.
“He wants to narrow the gap between them and Celtic. It just became a big opportunity.
“At the same time, I didn’t want to go to a team that wasn’t winning. I wanted to keep that winning mentality that I’ve had from Shrewsbury and Brighton.
“I’ve always been used to being in winning teams and I wanted to carry that on.”
Football Insider verdict:
Goldson’s signing is a statement of intent by the Light Blues and it speaks volumes that the 25-year-old chose a move to Scotland over dropping down to the Championship. Gerrard obviously has a pull in bringing players to Ibrox but even with his reputation, if he doesn’t sell his plans well then players will be put off. Getting Goldson in early, as well as Nikola Katic, gives Gerrard a great opportunity to spend time working on how he wants his defence instead of simply throwing them together and trying to work on it as the games went on. The former Brighton defender speaks well about his move north and fans are excited to see him perform for the Light Blues. The biggest question surrounding the 25-year-old is who will partner him in defence and whether Bruno Alves or Katic will be Gerrard’s first choice. Goldson is almost certain to be a mainstay in the side so the others will have to fight to get a place alongside him in the starting XI.
