Ian Murray believes Rangers may move for 32-year-old in the summer
By Harvey Byrne
Former Rangers and Scotland international Ian Murray believes the Gers may make a move to re-sign his old teammate Steven Whittaker this summer.
The 32-year-old right-back is set to leave Norwich at the end of his current contract after the Canaries announced a number of their players would be leaving the club after a less than impressive season.
The 31-time capped Scotland international has played just 12 times in the Championship this season with his most recent appearance coming in a 3-0 defeat against Huddersfield at the start of April.
Now, with Whittaker soon to be available on a free, Murray has told that former clubs Rangers and Hibernian are the two “obvious” teams who would be in for him this summer.
“Steven’s a very good player and can play different positions as well. He’s a good guy to have around the team as well,” told Murray, as quoted by the Scotsman.
“It will depend on what he wants to do with his career and his life at the moment – and what is best for his family.
“Leaving Norwich, at the top end of the Championship, he is going to have plenty of suitors.
“He is a good player, who can play right-back, left-back and probably right midfield as well, so a good player for whoever gets him.
“I wouldn’t say he was underrated but if you were his team-mate you certainly knew what you were going to get from him.
“He’s one of those players you want to play with because you know that he’ll give you everything. Hibs and Rangers are the two obvious teams who would maybe be in for him, with him having played for both of those clubs before, and it will be interesting to see what happens.”
Whittaker first joined Rangers from Hibs in the summer of 2007 for a fee of £2million.
He went on to play for the club for a further five years, featuring 196 times for the Gers as the club went on to win the Premiership three times alongside two Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups.
The Ibrox giants are currently playing with James Tavernier as their first choice right-back with Lee Hodson in reserve and they may look to add more experience to their back line in the summer as they look to challenge Celtic again.
In other Rangers transfer news, Gers fans are undecided on a move for this 32-year-old attacker.
