Ian Wright: Arsenal need a player like this PL 25-year-old

By Derek Smithson

Ian Wright has revealed he is hoping Arsenal are making a move for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

The 25-year-old is regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and has been at the centre of major interest from Liverpool.

However, the Merseyside club confirmed on their official website that they have ended their pursuit of the Holland international after reports of an alleged illegal approach.

Gunners legend Wright believes that his former side should move for Van Dijk and feels that he would be a good fit.

“I really hope that behind the scenes Arsenal are at least inquiring about Big Virg Van Dyke [Van Dijk]. Need a player like that,” Wright wrote on his personal Twitter account.

Van Dijk has become an important player for the Saints following his arrival in 2015 and is being tipped to make a summer move to one of the Premier League’s elite clubs.

The centre-back is recognised for his ability in possession and his physical defensive presence.

He has made a seamless transition to English football after joining Southampton from Scottish champions Celtic and Wright feels he could make another step up.

Arsenal do already have several centre-back options at their disposal, including the likes of Gabriel, Laurent Koscielny, Rob Holding, Shkodran Mustafi and Per Mertesacker.

However, manager Arsene Wenger began to use a three-man defence at the back-end of last season and could need some extra recruitments for next year.
