Rangers are locked in a battle with Derby County over signing two Scotland-based players, Football Insider understands.
The Glasgow giants and the English Championship promotion candidates are both chasing Birmingham City forward Greg Stewart and Aberdeen defender Graeme Shinnie.
Shinnie, 27, is out of contract at Aberdeen at the end of the season and has been the subject of interest from a number of clubs in Scotland and England.
Stewart, 29, is on loan at Aberdeen from Birmingham, and will also be a free agent at the end of the campaign when his three-year deal with the English club expires.
A source close to the club has told Football Insider that Derby are now in pole position to sign Shinnie ahead of Rangers, Sheffield United and Bristol City as manager Frank Lampard looks to strengthen his squad ahead of next season.
Shinnie’s availability on a free transfer and his versatility in that he can play at left-back and midfield makes him an attractive option for Lampard.
Aberdeen are eager to convert Stewart’s loan into a permanent transfer but the source explained the club cannot match the offers that Rangers, Derby and other Championship clubs south of the border can put on the table.
In other Rangers transfer news, it can be REVEALED the club are working on a deal to sign a player who has got Sir Alex Ferguson drooling.
