Ibrox exclusive: McNamara believes Rangers handed big boost ahead of Celtic showdown

Jackie McNamara believes Rangers have been handed a big boost with Steven Davis returning to action ahead of Sunday’s clash with Celtic.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the ex-Celtic enforcer admitted the Gers will be pleased to have Davis available again especially for the Old Firm Derby due to his experience.

The 34-year-old midfielder made a cameo appearance in the 1-0 win over Kilmarnock on Boxing Day after missing his side’s previous two league games due to injury.

Davis also missed the Gers’ Scottish Cup final loss to Celtic earlier this month due to the same injury.

McNamara explained that with Davis getting some minutes under his belt, Steven Gerrard’s side will now just be hoping he’s fully fit by Sunday.

When asked if it’s a big boost for Rangers to have Davies back ahead of the Old Firm Derby, McNamara told Football Insider: “Yeah I think they’ll be pleased to get him back for Sunday due to his experience.

“He got 15 minutes so they’ll be hoping he’ll be fully fit for Sunday.”

Davis has played 26 times across all competitions for the Gers this season, scoring one goal and registering two assists in the process.

The midfielder, who has 107 caps for Northern Ireland, rejoined the Gers on a permanent basis in the summer after spending the tail end of his 2018/19 season on loan at the club.

Davis is contracted to stay at Ibrox until 2021 after recently signing a one-year extension.
