Noel Whelan heaped praise on Connor Goldson after the “perfect” Rangers defender produced a match-winning display in the 2-0 win over Celtic on Saturday.
The former Aberdeen and Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that “the result has put the cat among the pigeons” in regards to the title race, despite only a quarter of the season having been played.
Goldson, 27, scored two and helped Steven Gerrard’s side keep a clean sheet in the first Old Firm clash of the 2020/21 campaign at Celtic Park.
The English defender has not missed a single minute of action this season, scoring twice in the qualifying stages for the Europa League.
Whelan is adamant that the win, which sees the Gers move four points clear of their Glasgow rivals, is a significant moment in the title race.
“Goldson was absolutely excellent. It does not get any better than that for a defender, two goals and a clean sheet. That is your perfect performance, especially in a derby game against your biggest rivals.
“The win gives Rangers the impetus because now, even with a game in hand, Celtic can only move to within one point.
“The result has put the cat among the pigeons, even this early on in the title race.”
Speaking to RangersTV after the win, Goldson said: “It is a massive three points as every single Old Firm game is, but we have a lot of games to play.
“For me, the clean sheet is just as important (as the goals).”
