Hearts are set to beat Rangers to the signing of Livingston centre-back Craig Halkett ahead of the summer window, Football Insider sources understand.

The Tynecastle outfit have been working on a deal to land the defender, 23, and are confident an agreement is now in place ahead of his Livi contract expiring in the summer.

A club source told Football Insider that Rangers have also explored the possibility of re-signing their academy product on a summer free but they are set to step aside as Hearts look to finalise terms.

Halkett has emerged as a target of the SPL’s leading clubs after making such a big impact for Livi since their promotion to the top flight.

He has played every minute of the eighth-placed outfit’s 30 league matches and also weighed in with an impressive five goals.

Football Insider revealed in October Rangers were on the trail of Halkett after he blew Steven Gerrard away with his outstanding performance in Livingston’s win over his side on 30 September.

The 23-year-old came through the ranks at Rangers, but never made the breakthrough into the first-team and was allowed to leave for Livingston in 2016 by then-boss Mark Warburton.
