Danny Mills has warned Leeds United fans to expect “head in hands moments” from Kiko Casilla as he raves over what the goalkeeper brings at Elland Road.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Whites and England defender says that the former Real Madrid star, who arrived at the club in January, is a crucial part of Marcelo Bielsa’s tactics of playing out from the back.
The Spanish stopper started life brightly at Leeds before coming under heavy fire for a number of shaky performances, including in the Championship play-off semi-final against Derby County.
After another hit-and-miss performance in the 3-1 win over Bristol City, the keeper flapping at a number of crosses, Mills says his style of play is going to have the fans watching through their fingers at times but that he is exactly what is needed between the sticks.
Mills told Football Insider: “The problem with Casilla is he has a way of playing. It’s what he does, he takes incredible risks at times and when it comes off, it’s great. Bielsa has this way of playing.
“With his feet he’s exceptional most of the time. He’s picking the ball up and pinging it out to full-backs and setting up attacks. You have take a little bit of rough with the smooth. There will be a couple of times he gets caught out or plays somebody into trouble.
“There aren’t too many other goalkeepers who can play that way. It is going to be a little bit heart in mouth, there will be a few palpitations among fans and there will be a few head in hands moments.”
Casilla, 32, has played 20 times for Leeds since moving from Real Madrid, keeping six clean sheets to date.
He has fresh competition for his place in goal with Bailey Peacock-Farrell replaced by Illan Meslier, the French keeper signed on loan from Lorient for the 2019/20 season.
In other Leeds United news, Darren Bent has told Football Insider what to expect from new signing Eddie Nketiah.
