Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has been the “outstanding” player in Scotland and deserves to win the player of the year award, according to Kris Boyd.

But the Sky Sports pundit and Kilmarnock striker warned that the Colmbian striker’s temperament and the antipathy some hold towards the Light Blues could stop him getting the accolade he deserves.

Boyd is convinced Morelos should get the nod ahead of his teammate Allan McGregor and Celtic duo James Forrest and Callum McGregor.

“He has been my Player of the Year and is the man who should be crowned,” Boyd told the Scottish Sun. “Whether that happens, I’m not so sure. He has rubbed some opponents up the wrong way while there are others who simply won’t vote for him because they don’t like Rangers. That’s why the whole awards process is fundamentally flawed in my opinion.

“Morelos has been the outstanding player in the country this season and that’s a fact. Forrest and McGregor have both been excellent for Celtic but there’s no doubt their form dipped for a while.

“Given the amount of times he’s been suspended this season, 29 is an incredible return. At times this season he has been a joy to watch.”

Football Insider verdict:

Boyd is spot-on. Morelos’ teammate McGregor has barely put a foot wrong on his Ibrox return, while Celtic’s McGregor has done more than anyone else to keep his club on course for a third consecutive treble despite some wobbles. But Morelos has produced some performances that have taken the breath away at times and proved why he is destined for a move to one of Europe’s elite leagues. That is likely to come this summer, given the goals he has scored and the improvements he has made to his game. In every area, Morelos is getting better all the time – his movement, hold-up play, linking with teammates and his finishing. Even that hair-trigger temper, which has let him down so many times during his two seasons in Scotland, appears to be not quite as much of a hindrance as it was. Four red cards this season is a ridiculously high number, but a couple of those were unfortunate, and there are signs Morelos is starting to grow up. He is developing into a mighty fine all-round striker.

In other Rangers transfer news, it can be REVEALED that the Ibrox club are on the verge of signing a player after agreeing the terms of a £15,000-a-week deal.
