Insider verdict on Tottenham signing Lingard in January after source's transfer update

Tottenham won’t sign Jesse Lingard as there are already plenty of attacking options at the club.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that talks with Lingard, 28, over a new contract have collapsed and the player has no intention to restart negotiations.

West Ham, Newcastle, and Everton are among the sides interested in signing Lingard, while ESPN report, Tottenham have joined the chase.

As revealed by Football Insider (19th November), Lingard is among five stars who can leave Old Trafford in January.

Wenham expects Lingard will head back to West Ham even if Tottenham were to make an offer.

“I saw something in the week about Tottenham being in pole position for Lingard,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I don’t see that. He’s a good player but we have so many similar players to him.

“Ndombele and Alli are just two names. I can’t see us signing Lingard while we are selecting Lucas Moura to start over both of them.

“I would rule that one out even though it’s a transfer I wouldn’t say no to.

“Obviously I have spoken about the transfer links between West Ham and Tottenham before.

“I think given the chance, Lingard would choose a move to West Ham over a move to Tottenham and to be honest I can see that happening.”

Lingard scored nine goals and chipped in with four assists during his loan spell with the Hammers last season.

His only league goal this season came against his former side on 19 September.
