‘Isak returns, Wilson dropped ahead of exit’ Newcastle predicted XI v Everton

Eddie Howe must get his starting XI right against Everton or Newcastle risk missing out on Champions League football.

The Magpies may be forced to stick with their three-at-the-back system due to fitness issues.

Howe’s squad is limping to the finish line, with Joelinton, Kieran Trippier, Lewis Hall, and Matt Targett all unavailable due to injury.

Meanwhile, there are still some concerns surrounding the fitness of Liverpool target Alexander Isak, after he was left out of the starting XI in their heated 1-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday (18 May).

The previous meeting between Newcastle and Everton was a 0-0 draw in October 2024, and the Magpies have not won against the Toffees since April 2023.

But with their season boiling down to one result, Howe’s side will have to be firing on all cylinders when the two sides meet on Sunday (25 May).

Alexander Isak returns to starting line-up for Newcastle

Having missed the loss against Mike Arteta‘s side, Isak will undoubtedly make his return to the starting lineup.

Callum Wilson’s contract expires at the end of the season, and whilst he has been a crucial figure for the Magpies’ renaissance in recent years, he is no longer capable of meeting the level required for Howe’s side.

Flanking Isak will be Harvey Barnes and Arsenal target Anthony Gordon, forcing Jacob Murphy to feature as a right wing-back, where he struggled during the loss against the North London side.

Tino Livramento is one of several Newcastle stars who could be on their way out this summer, and his versatility will likely see him feature as a left wing-back again.

Eddie Howe forced to stick with three-at-the-back system

With Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes featuring in a midfield two, Howe will be relying on the duo to protect his backline whilst the wing-backs push forward.

Dan Burn has spent much of his career at St. James’ Park as a left-back, but he will likely once again slot in on the left side of a back three.

Rounding out the defence will be Sven Botman and Fabian Schar, with Nick Pope in goal, potentially playing his final game for Newcastle against Everton.

Whilst not the most ideal line-up, Howe has few other options to pick from and will be hoping that his squad can claim all three points against the Toffees, thus securing their return to the Champions League next season.
