‘This isn’t going to go well’ – Aston Villa fans react on Twitter to Carabao Cup draw

By Harvey Byrne

Aston Villa fans on Twitter are not optimistic after being drawn against League Two outfit Colchester United away on Friday afternoon in the Carabao Cup.

The Midlands giants will head to the Colcehester Community Stadium for a tie which is set to be played in the week commencing August 7.

Aston Villa sit two divisions above their opponents and many will have Steve Bruce’s side as clear favourites to win the clash.

However, the club have struggled in the League Cup in recent years after being knocked out by League Two outfit Luton last season, while also being defeated by Leyton Orient as a Premier League team in 2014.

Villa’s main focus next season will be on trying to win promotion, but many have suggested that they are now expecting an early defeat in the cup on social media.

Here are a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Aston Villa have only met Colchester three times in their history, achieving two wins while also losing once in 90 minutes.

It was the most recent clash in September 1979 which ended in defeat and that was also in the League Cup, as Colchester ran out a 2-0 win after 90 minutes before being dumped out 9-8 in an entertaining penalty shootout.
