Jack Grealish has heaped praise on defenders Tommy Elphick and James Chester after Aston Villa’s 1-0 win against Wigan.
In a question-and-answer session with the Birmingham Mail, Grealish claimed that the defensive duo were brilliant at the back as they earned Villa’s fifth clean sheet of the season.
“I think with Tommy (Elphick) and Ches (James Chester) were brilliant at the back,” Grealish said.
“Their striker was a bit of a handful. They (Wigan) came here with a gameplan, but obviously those two were brilliant at the back and in the end we scored the goal.”
Grealish, 21, popped up when he was needed the most to secure all three points against the Latics in the 88th minute, as he curled a stunning effort into the top corner to earn a 1-0 win.
His goal saw Villa move to within just four points of the Championship playoffs, as they sit in 13th place on 28 points.
Both summer signings from the Premier League, Chester and Elphick have struck a solid partnership at the heart of Villa’s defence this season.
Wearing the captain’s armband, Wales international Chester decided to swap rivals West Brom for Villa and has looked solid at the back during his 19 appearances this season.
Elphick, who cost a third of Chester’s £9million transfer fee, has also caught the eye at the back for Villa this season after signing from Bournemouth in the summer.
Villa are next in action against Norwich, as they travel to East Anglia to face Alex Neil’s men at Carrow Road on Tuesday night.
A win for the likes of Chester, Elphick and Grealish will see Villa continue to claw in their Championship rivals as they eye a playoff spot.
