Jack Hinshelwood: Brighton star should have been sent off amid viral Liverpool image – Keith Hackett

Jack Hinshelwood should have been sent off by Darren England during Brighton & Hove Albion’s surprise win over Liverpool.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that the viral image is already enough to warrant a red card on Saturday, 21 March.

Despite Milos Kerkez’s equaliser in the first half at the Amex Stadium, Danny Welbeck hit the back of the net for a second time to seal an unlikely three points for the Seagulls.

Liverpool have now lost 10 Premier League games, more than their previous two campaigns combined, but it could have been very different had Brighton’s No.13 been punished for his challenge on Curtis Jones.

Jack Hinshelwood somehow escapes punishment vs Liverpool

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the image, the former referee said: “I’m always reluctant to talk about a still image, but he’s very clearly out of control, and he’s high.

“If I want to be generous, I’ll see it as reckless. But if I apply the law as it’s written, it’s a red card. The landing area is too high, and that suggests he’s endangered the safety of an opponent.

“To give nothing, and with VAR in operation, this is another worrying area. What have they seen differently from what I’m seeing?

“I know the dangers of a still image, because speed does play an element, but I think he’s a lucky boy. It’s minimum yellow, but I can justify a red.”

Darren England should be sanctioned after Amex Stadium display

Both sets of supporters ended up leaving the Amex Stadium rather frustrated, and the referee is to blame for a lot of that, and not just the Reds slipping up again away from Anfield.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hackett said that Yankuba Minteh should have seen red, possibly for multiple incidents during the game, until he was finally subbed off in the 76th minute.

The winger could have easily picked up a second yellow card for multiple infringements after being cautioned in the 25th minute, and Fabian Hurzeler must have words with the 21-year-old.

One of those incidents was for diving inside the penalty area, throwing himself to the floor in search of a spot-kick, but he was allowed to continue playing until being replaced late in the second half.
