Jacob Murphy stunner: ‘Newcastle ace branded weekend’s best at Southampton’

Jacob Murphy has been hailed by Don Hutchison for one moment as Newcastle came from behind to beat Southampton at St Mary’s.

Following the frustrations of their 4-1 thrashing by Bournemouth last weekend, the Magpies will have been keen to bounce back when they made the long trip to face Ivan Juric’s side on Saturday (25 January).

Things did not start well for the visitors though, with Jan Bednarek heading the home side in front with just ten minutes on the clock.

Newcastle equalised quarter of an hour later from the penalty spot as Alexander Isak fired home, before doubling his tally just a few moments after, having been played in by Murphy.

The assist from the Magpies attacker was also one that delighted Hutchison. While speaking about the strike as it was shown on a world feed goal rush, the former Scotland international said:

“Well that might be the assist of the weekend from Jacob Murphy, he fires it in to Alexander Isak but he had to hit it with so much pace to find his teammate. This ball here, is terrific, and a fantastic first touch.

“If you’re a centre-forward you want to take that with your backfoot and put it into your stride, looks like a good recovery that from Newcastle.”

Football Insider Verdict

Understandably, Alexander Isak has dominated many of the headlines for his exploits for Eddie Howe’s side this season.

Murphy though has also been a standout performer for Newcastle in recent times, making some big contributions.

This was another one of those, given they both needed and expected a response to last weekend in a match against a side struggling as much as Southampton.

It is a reminder of just how important he is to this side, and there is no denying it was a brilliant assist for Isak.

Isak was again on the scoresheet against Southampton

The weight of the pass was exactly right to put the striker in one on one, and from there Newcastle were only ever going to go 2-1 up with the form he is in.

As a result, this would prove to be yet another result and performance from the Magpies in which Murphy deserves some considerable credit for his efforts.

A 3-1 result will be satisfying for Howe as they make the long trip home to the North East.
