Connor Goldson is desperate to hook up with Steven Gerrard at Rangers, according to former teammate James Collins.
Goldson and Collins played together at Shrewsbury and the former Hibs striker thinks Rangers will be getting a brilliant deal if Goldson signs.
The Daily Record claims that a £3million deal is edging closer.
Talking in the Daily Record, Collins, now at Luton, said: “A move to Rangers would suit Connor down to the ground. He is still a very good friend of mine and I speak to him often.
“Connor was also a massive Liverpool fan growing up and Steven Gerrard in particular was one of his heroes.
“So if someone like Gerrard comes knocking on your door and is desperate to sign you then it will turn your head and you will certainly want to have a look at what is on offer.
“He is a Brighton player for now but if the chance comes for Connor to go to Rangers then I am sure he would jump at it.
“He is a young centre-half who has played a lot of games at a very good level. He is captain material, a natural-born leader.
“Bringing Connor in would be a brilliant signing coup for Gerrard and Rangers. He is the kind of player who will help Rangers take the next step in order to get back to where they want to be.”
Football Insider verdict:
Effusive praise for Goldson from Collins, and there’s a feeling from most sides that Rangers are getting a very good player in Goldson. He’s been kept out of the Brighton side by Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy, but Brighton fans rate him and don’t want to lose him, and his side has been holding off for a significant fee, which suggests they know exactly how good he is. The deal does seem to be edging closer as well, and unless there’s an issue with the medical – Goldson has had heart surgery – then we’d expect Rangers to be announcing this one pretty soon. That’s not going to be the end of the defensive upgrades hopefully. We think that Gerrard needs another centre-back before he can even start to focus on the issues at the other end of the pitch. However, if he gets another enforcer and a 20-goal-a-season striker, then the Premiership could be a very interesting competition next season.
