James Tavernier expected to sign new Rangers deal after ‘huge’ update – pundit

Frank McAvennie is adamant James Tavernier will sign a new contract at Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Celtic striker suggested the 30-year-old enjoys being captain of the Gers and will willingly put pen to paper.

Tavernier has two years left on his current contract but is keen to sign an extension.

As quoted by Football Scotland (30 July), the 30-year-old said talks with the Glasgow club are “still ongoing.”

The defender added that he doesn’t see himself moving “any time soon” as is “very happy” at Ibrox.

When asked how important it was for Rangers to secure a new deal for the right-back, McAvennie told Football Insider: “I think Tavernier is the catalyst for them.

Him and [Alfredo] Morelos are huge for them. People keep moaning about Tavernier saying he’s not the best defender. But he gives a lot going forward and that’s the way of the game now I think. People don’t want defenders anymore it’s like a dying trade.

Tavernier is one of these players who loves the free kicks, he loves the penalties, he loves getting forward and scoring goals.

He’s moulded himself into this captain figure, you can’t criticise a player like that. A new contract is nothing. That will get signed.

I don’t think there’s a problem with Tavernier. He likes it there, he likes being the captain and he’s grown into it so I don’t think there will be a problem with him.
