Tavernier: Rangers 22-year-old is guaranteed first-team chances

Rangers full-back James Tavernier insists Gers striker Jason Cummings is “guaranteed” chances if he is involved when the Light Blues take on his old side Hibs at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon.
The striker has made three appearances since signing on loan from Nottingham Forest on January 15th and scored his first goal for the Gers in last week’s win over Ross County.
The 22-year-old made a habit of scoring in Rangers v Hibs clashed during his time at Easter Road with 8 goals in 13 appearances against the Gers before heading to Nottingham in the summer.
Tavernier is confident Cummings will get his chance to score against his old team and revealed Cumming “hasn’t done anything daft” yet since arriving at Ibrox.
“He’s a Rangers player now and we’re at Ibrox so he’ll get some stick from the away fans but we’ve got 50,000 home fans behind him,” Tavernier said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“From day one you knew he had a goal in his locker and he proved that. He’s come into Rangers and we know that he’s got goals in him, as you saw at Ross County.
“He’ll definitely celebrate if he scores. If he starts or comes on he’ll always be guaranteed a chance in this team and hopefully he takes it.
“Off the park, he hasn’t done anything daft. He’s actually been sensible. I saw some of the things he did when he wasn’t here but he’s been good since he’s been here and hopefully that’ll continue.”
Graeme Murty’s side face a must-win game against their Edinburgh rivals with second-place Aberdeen opening up a three point gap over the Gers following their midweek win over Ross County.
The Gers now have a game in hand on Derek McInnes’ side – Tuesday’s upcoming clash with Partick Thistle – and will be hoping to put themselves in a position to take advantage if the Dons drop points this weekend.
Last time Rangers faced Hibs, the Gers had to come from a goal down to secure a 2-1 win at Easter Road in December.
