James Trafford move from Man City ‘could happen very quickly’, three likely destinations named

Newcastle will face competition from two rival clubs for Man City goalkeeper James Trafford in the January transfer window.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes there will be demand for the 23-year-old.

Trafford is a high priority for Newcastle in January, after Eddie Howe wanted to sign the shot stopper in the summer.

Man City beat Newcastle to Trafford’s signature, but the former Burnley player finds himself below Gianluigi Donnarumma in the pecking order at the Etihad.

James Trafford ‘will make a move’ in January

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Aston Villa and Tottenham will compete with Newcastle to sign Trafford.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks that Trafford will leave Man City.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I’m thinking more Villa, if [Emiliano] Martinez goes, and possibly Spurs. I think there’s going to be a demand for him.

He’s a quality keeper and I think there are a few clubs that are still unhappy in that position. But certainly those are the sort of the three clubs I think, yeah, Newcastle, Villa, Spurs are where I think Trafford may end up.

Obviously it’s very hard to think your number two to Donnarumma because you you’re not going to get much chance unless he gets injured. So I think he will make a move.

I think that’s fair to him because he’s a quality young keeper. But I think those are the sort of target clubs I’d be thinking about, not just Newcastle. And we’ll see how what develops. But that could be something that could happen very quickly in January as well.”

Wolves to compete for Trafford

Wolves also hold an interest in Trafford going into January, with Rob Edwards wanting to strengthen the goalkeeping position at the club.

Jose Sa started the season in-between the sticks, but Sam Johnstone has reclaimed the number one jersey at Molineux.

The Old Gold have shipped 33 goals in 15 Premier League games this season, and currently sit bottom of the table with just two points.
