Jamie Carragher predicts Liverpool v Everton
By Will Butcher
Jamie Carragher believes Everton can cause an upset against Liverpool by ending their 18-year Anfield hoodoo in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off.
The Toffees have failed to win at Liverpool’s ground since 1999, which saw Kevin Campbell score the only goal of the game while Steven Gerrard, Sander Westerveld and Francis Jeffers all received red cards.
Liverpool legend Carragher told Grand Old Team TV that he can see Everton claiming victory, with the Reds suffering home defeats to Wolves and Southampton at Anfield this season.
The former defender also believes that a new ground for Everton would be great for the city, with plans being put in place to build a new 50,000 capacity stadium at Bramley Moore Dock.
“Why not?,” Carragher said, when asked if Everton could snatch all three points. “Everton are flying. They’re doing really well. They’ve got a good side. You’ve seen other teams come to Anfield and win.
“I want Everton to do all right. I think it’d be great if Everton had a new stadium. I think it’d be great for the city.”
The Toffees come into Sunday’s clash having won eight of their last 11 Premier League matches, including wins against Man City, Leicester and West Brom.
They also possess the league’s top goalscorer in Belgium international Romelu Lukaku, who continued his form during the international break with a goal against Greece.
However, Jurgen Klopp has seen his side claw back a degree of form after a dismal start to 2017 that saw them win just twice in January and February.
Following the 1-1 draw against Man City prior to the international break, Liverpool have lost only once in their last five games, securing three points against Man City and Tottenham.
Victory for the Reds would see them consolidate their position in the top four, and could even see them go above Man City if Arsenal can force Pep Guardiola’s side to drop points on Sunday.
In other Liverpool news, Dejan Lovren has urged his side to sign this Croatia teammate.
