Jan Vertonghen posts Twitter verdict as Tottenham secure narrow win v Southampton
By Will Butcher
Jan Vertonghen was elated on Twitter after Tottenham secured a narrow 2-1 win over Southampton at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon.
Goals from Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli gave Spurs a 2-0 lead, before talented midfielder James Ward-Prowse gave Saints hope by reducing the north London side’s lead to 2-1.
However, Mauricio Pochettino’s defensive rearguard held on to secure all three points over Southampton, in what was Spurs’ first game since Harry Kane suffered an ankle injury.
Belgian defender Vertonghen posted on his Twitter account, claiming the win against Claude Puel’s side was “tough but very important” as Spurs go nine points clear of rivals Arsenal.

Former Ajax playmaker Eriksen gave Spurs the lead in the 14th minute, firing home from 25 yards out past goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

The lead was doubled by England international Alli from the penalty spot, as he converted from 12 yards to score his 17th goal in all competitions for Spurs this season.
Vertonghen made his 31st appearance of the season for Spurs, winning his 19th game as Spurs continue to fight on two fronts in both the league and the FA Cup.
The win keeps the pressure on league leaders Chelsea, and sees Spurs gain a huge advantage over north London enemies Arsenal who now sit way behind in sixth place after they lost to West Brom on Saturday.
Pochettino takes his side to Lancashire next, as the Argentinian manager looks to mastermind a fifth straight win against Sean Dyche’s Burnley at Turf Moor.
