Monk responds when asked if Jansson will be recalled to Leeds XI against Reading

By Alex Stevens

Garry Monk has revealed that Pontus Jansson is in contention to return to the Leeds starting XI against Reading on Saturday.

The talismanic defender was surprisingly demoted to the substitute’s bench for Leeds’ 2-0 league win against Brighton immediately prior to the international break.

Jansson subsequently featured for Sweden in their wins over Portugal and Belarus and has returned to Thorp Arch aiming to return to the centre of defence in the Championship clash against play-off rivals Reading.

Liam Cooper was given the nod to partner Kyle Bartley against Brighton, and Monk is now weighing up who to select in his back line at the Madejski Stadium.

The Leeds manager insisted at his media briefing on Thursday, as quoted by the personal Twitter account of Yorkshire Evening Post correspondent Phil Hay, there are no lingering issues with Jansson and he will select the players based on what he believes is best for the team.

Monk explained that he is yet to decide on the Leeds starting XI, including whether Jansson will be in the team.

The manager will make his decision after the team’s training session at their Thorp Arch headquarters on Friday.

Jansson has been a mainstay of Leeds’ promotion-chasing side, starting 28 of their 38 Championship matches since joining from Torino initially on a season-long loan.

Such has been his impact that he has already agreed to join Leeds on a permanent deal at the end of the season, having already signed a three-year contract.

Meanwhile, Chris Wood is in contention to face Reading after his striker partner Souleymane Doukara revealed the New Zealand international has been training with the first team since returning early from international duty with what was said to be a minor injury.

Leeds head to Reading aiming to secure a place in the end-of-season play-offs, and increase their current tally of 69 points from 38 matches.

In other Leeds transfer news, the club have sealed an out-of-window midfielder transfer.
