Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville respond as Edson Alvarez undergoes surgery

Edson Alvarez still felt the love from his former West Ham teammates as the Fenerbahce midfielder underwent surgery.

Supporters at the London Stadium were desperate for the Mexican international to be sold or gotten rid of during his time in East London, but it is clear that he remains close to a few of the players.

Despite arriving on a £35.4million deal in the summer of 2023, Declan Rice‘s replacement was never a fan-favourite, with many finding the negatives during his 73 appearances for the club.

He was sent off far too many times, made costly errors and simply was not good enough for a mid-table Premier League team, leaving for Turkey on a season-long loan in the summer.

Of course, Alvarez is likely to return to West Ham at the end of the season, with his future completely up in the air ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which he will want to be fit again for.

Taking to Instagram (17 February), Alvarez wrote: “It’s been a rough few days, weeks and months. I firmly believe that everything that happens has a purpose, even when it’s not easy to understand.

“I learn to be thankful even in the moments that life tests me. I am 100% focused on my recovery to come back stronger and continue doing what I love most.”

Responding to the former Hammers midfielder’s update, Crysencio Summerville commented, “El machin,” with love heart and praying emojis, while Jarrod Bowen replied with two heart emojis.

Konstantinos Mavropanos also left praying and love heart emojis in the comments, with a number of other footballing stars flocking onto his post to console the injured star.

How are West Ham’s other loanees faring this season?

James Ward-Prowse was the most recent exit, joining Burnley shortly before the winter transfer window slammed shut, but he has made just two appearances since then.

Youngster Kaelan Casey is doing a little better at Leyton Orient, but having only started three of his six games for the League One side, he would have hoped for a few more minutes.

George Earthy is the player who supporters will have the most eyes on, given that many believe he could be the next rising star at the London Stadium.

However, since returning to Bristol City, he has only played four games, unable to get off the bench in the last two games against Derby County and Hull City.

Niclas Fullkrug (AC Milan), Callum Marshall (Bochum) and Junior Robinson (Boreham Wood) are all trying to get their loan spells off the ground before the 2025-26 season comes to an end.
