Jason McAteer believes that Liverpool should sell forward Daniel Sturridge this summer and suggests that a move to Paris Saint-Germain would be an ideal destination for him.
The 27-year-old struggled for game time last season and was unable to cement his spot in the starting line-up under Jurgen Klopp.
He made just 27 appearances across all competitions and scored seven goals in return, with a number of injury problems halting his progress throughout the campaign.
Sturridge has been at Anfield since he joined from Chelsea in 2013 and has scored an impressive 61 goals in 119 appearances for the Merseyside club.
However, he has struggled to fit into Klopp’s high intensity style recently and several people believe that he needs to move on to experience regular football.
Ex-Liverpool midfielder McAteer feels that Sturridge should leave the Reds in the transfer window and has identified French giants PSG as a potential next club.
“I think it will be good for Daniel to get away,” McAterr told the Daily Mirror. “There’s no doubt he has quality and is a fantastic player, who is still only 27, but he just doesn’t play enough.
“My personal opinion is that Daniel would thrive at somewhere like PSG. Playing with superstars like Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria would suit his game. In France, he would also be out of the constant spotlight. But, whatever happens, the time is right for Daniel to move.”
McAteer believes that Ligue 1 side PSG would be a good for Sturridge as he would be able to focus on his football away from the limelight.
They finished runners-up in the French league last season to Monaco and reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Sturridge may have individual ambitions of being involved in the England set-up for the World Cup in 2018, but he was not included in Gareth Southgate’s latest squad.
The 25-time capped England international has not featured since November 2016 and it could take a move for him to rediscover his best form.
In other Liverpool transfer news, they are in a battle with Arsenal for a 23-year-old striker.
