'Jealous' pundit can't believe latest Aston Villa January plan as Bissouma update reported

Noel Whelan has claimed Aston Villa could have “one of the best January transfer windows” ever by signing Yves Bissouma from Brighton.

The former Leeds star, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he would be “jealous” if the Villans manage to do a deal for the 25-year-old.

As reported by the Telegraph on Wednesday (12 January), Aston Villa are plotting a move to sign Bissouma this month.

Brighton have reportedly set a £40million price tag on the midfielder’s head.

Villa want Bissouma as their fourth signing of the month following the arrivals of Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Digne and Kerr Smith.

Whelan admitted the Villans could become a “complete” side with the Brighton star’s capture.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think if they if they actually managed to get Bissouma, their transfer window has probably been one of the best transfer windows of any club in January ever, for a long, long time.

“I really mean that, I really do mean that. We know how difficult January can be.

“Bissouma has been one of the best defensive midfield players, a box-to-box player, that I’ve seen for about three seasons now at Brighton. He really has got everything.

“On the ball, strength, competitive nature. He’s one of these players that kind of goes under the radar a little bit because you’re always looking at Maupay and other players.

“Never underestimate how important he is for Brighton in that midfield area. Commanding it, owning it, winning balls back, starting play off breaking plays up.

“He has been consistent for Brighton over seasons now. I’m quite jealous if they go in for him. He would be somebody that would do a fantastic job at any club in the Premier League.

“He would not look out of place in any side. For Aston Villa. I think if they get him, that solidifies their side now. They are pretty much complete in all areas if they can pull that one off.”

Bissouma has 100 Premier League games under his belt to date.

He is currently playing for Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations.
